In a significant move against illegal online gambling, Thai authorities have arrested a prominent Thai boxer known simply as “Sutthiwat.” With a robust following of around 440,000 users on Facebook, Sutthiwat was apprehended for promoting gambling websites, a stark violation of Thailand’s strict Gambling Act of 1935.
The arrest was executed by the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) in collaboration with the Technology Crime Suppression Division (TCSD), spearheaded by Police Lieutenant General Jiraphob Bhuridej and Police Major General Athip Pongsiwapai. This operation followed a meticulous investigation into Sutthiwat’s digital activities.
According to the CIB and TCSD, Sutthiwat admitted to advertising links to gambling websites on his Facebook page. These promotions were charged at THB1,500 (approximately $45) per post, showcasing his involvement in this illicit activity. “I am the owner of the Facebook page and was paid by the gambling website owner to post advertisements in my stories,” confessed Sutthiwat, acknowledging his breach of legal conduct.
Section 12 of the Gambling Act strictly prohibits any unauthorized gambling advertisements, making Sutthiwat’s activities blatantly illegal. As the authorities continue to gather evidence to press formal charges, this case underscores Thailand’s ongoing mission to curb illegal gambling.
This crackdown is part of a broader, nationwide effort targeting illegal online gambling activities. The authorities have been employing advanced forensic methods to trace such digital footprints, and Sutthiwat’s confession marks a significant victory for the TCSD. “We’ve been actively monitoring online activities, and our efforts paid off in identifying this case,” a TCSD officer remarked, underlining the department’s dedication to fighting cybercrime.
The move serves as a stern reminder of the consequences of promoting gambling in Thailand, emphasizing the country’s commitment to maintaining law and order. Authorities continue to urge the public to report any suspicious activities, reinforcing their dedication to eradicating illegal gambling operations from the online sphere. As the investigation into Sutthiwat’s activities continues, the police have reassured the public of their unyielding resolve in tackling these issues head-on.
