Sperm Donation Scam: Man Duped of Over RM20,000

In a bizarre twist of events, a 49-year-old man known as Lee became the unfortunate victim of a peculiar scam involving sperm donation. The intriguing yet deceitful ordeal began when Lee stumbled upon an online advertisement featuring an alluring woman, which captivated his attention enough to compel him into submitting his personal information via an online form.

Lee’s interaction with the scam artist deepened when he was contacted through WhatsApp by a woman identifying herself as Chen from Singapore. Promising a seemingly unconventional mode of sperm donation through sexual intercourse, Chen lured Lee further into the fraudulent scheme. To bolster her claims, she shared a supposed photograph of herself and voiced messages intended to authenticate her identity. However, as Datuk Seri Michael Chong, the head of the MCA Public Services and Complaints Department noted, the image was likely pilfered from a modeling agency, and the voice messages bore a robotic, non-local accent—hints of deception that Lee, unfortunately, ignored.

The ruse unfolded further as Chen requested an initial payment of RM1,000 to supposedly connect Lee with her lawyer. Enticed by the promise of a lucrative payout, Lee complied and was soon presented with a contract via WhatsApp, falsely claiming it was from a renowned Malaysian law firm. The document boasted of a compensation of RM1 million, contingent upon Lee’s success in helping Chen conceive, beginning with an advance payment of RM300,000 to be delivered in under 48 hours, followed by RM700,000 post-conception.

Blinded by the financial allure and hindered by his limited literacy skills, Lee overlooked several red flags, including the contract’s awkward language. Consequently, he was coerced into wiring an additional RM24,000 to cover alleged processing fees. Reality hit when he was solicited for another RM30,000, a demand that finally prompted him to cut communication and seek Cheng’s assistance.

Michael Chong, upon investigating, confirmed with the law firm that Chen was not associated with them, revealing the scammers’ misuse of their identity. Chong highlighted the syndicate’s modus operandi, preying on vulnerable individuals by exploiting their weaknesses, such as Lee’s literacy challenges.

The peculiar scam serves as a cautionary tale, urging individuals to remain vigilant against similar frauds orchestrated by unscrupulous syndicates. The incident also underscores the importance of verifying the legitimacy of any solicitation and being wary of grandiose promises that are ultimately too good to be true.
