KUCHING (Sept 21): In an exciting development for Sarawak, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has hinted at “good news” regarding the state’s acquisition of shares in Affin Bank. The Premier announced that a significant update on this strategic move would be revealed within a week.
During his speech at the 100th anniversary celebration of Rh Nanga Samu in Paku, Betong, Abang Johari expressed his optimism about the acquisition process, noting that all matters, including those with Bank Negara Malaysia, have been proceeding smoothly.
The Premier emphasized the importance of this acquisition by stating, “We will have our bank in no time. Give it another week.” His remarks were made in the presence of notable figures such as Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and former deputy chief minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu Numpang.
This announcement comes at a time when Sarawak is making substantial strides toward a sustainable economy. Abang Johari reiterated his commitment to developing a high-income economy for the state of Sarawak. In an effort to achieve this, he has allocated RM1.5 billion as a development fund for Betong over a three-year period. The Premier acknowledged the generational challenges in adapting to new technologies but urged the younger generation to embrace them for the state’s growth.
“Sarawak’s economy must continue to stay strong so that more development projects can be implemented to benefit Sarawakians,” he stated, highlighting the importance of natural resources and technology in strengthening the economy. He also expressed a vision for the longhouse community and Sarawak to remain prosperous well into the future.
During the same event, Deputy Premier Uggah emphasized the historical significance of Rh Nanga Samu, the oldest longhouse in Sarawak, praising it for producing the region’s first Dayak graduate. He acknowledged Abang Johari’s leadership as instrumental in the ongoing development of Sarawak and announced significant investments in local infrastructure, including a RM248 million Short Take-off and Landing Airport (STOLport) and a RM17 million processing center near Betong.
Uggah assured the community of Betong that these projects, along with a dedicated RM70 million income enhancement project in Bukit Saban, are a testament to the government’s commitment to achieving a high-income economy by 2030. He expressed confidence in the completion of these projects on time, which would allow for direct export of local products, enhancing the region’s economic prospects.
Both leaders underscored the importance of solidarity and resilience as the region looks toward a future of continued growth and prosperity for Sarawak and its people.
