The recent collapse of a pond embankment at the construction site for the Sungai Rasau Water Supply Scheme in Puchong has raised concerns after more cracks were discovered at the site. Following the incident, Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar, the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department’s assistant director of operations, attributed these newly-formed fissures to potential ground movement, though he reassured that the situation remains under control.
Ahmad Mukhlis stated that the Fire and Rescue Department is actively monitoring the situation and ensuring compliance with the stop-work orders imposed at the site. A team from the Cyberjaya Fire and Rescue Station has been deployed to provide continuous oversight, ensuring that all necessary precautions are in place.
Notably, there were no casualties as all workers were quickly and safely evacuated when the unfolding landslide made its presence known with startling noises of ground shifting. This sequence of events triggered the site’s emergency alarm, facilitating a timely evacuation before any harm could occur. Despite the swift action, the exact cause of the embankment’s collapse remains under investigation.
In response to the situation, Gamuda, the company overseeing the project, has suspended all work at the site. They announced plans to collaborate with local authorities and experienced professionals to conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the collapse and to strategize on enhancing safety measures moving forward.
As the investigation proceeds, local authorities and stakeholders are expected to prioritize comprehensive safety evaluations to prevent similar incidents, ensuring the safety and confidence of workers and nearby residents alike.
