Motorcycle License Upgrade Program Now Available for RM160

In a significant announcement, the Malaysian Road Transport Department (JPJ) revealed a new upgrade plan for motorcycle licenses, aiming to facilitate a smooth transition for motorcyclists advancing from Class B2/B1 to Class B. This upgrade, set under the Special Transition Programme, is priced at RM160, involving three critical conditions that applicants must meet to be eligible.

The newly outlined conditions as shared by JPJ require applicants to be Malaysian citizens and hold a continuously valid Class B2/B1 competent driving license (CDL). Moreover, the third requirement mandates that applicants should not be on any blacklist or have pending summonses, transaction restrictions, records of serious offenses, or unresolved issues under Act 333.

JPJ Director-General, Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli, confirmed that motorcyclists who meet these prerequisites can start applying for the special upgrade program from October 1. Potential applicants can quickly check their eligibility via the MyJPJ app, the mySIKAP public portal, or at JPJ counters.

“Eligible participants can approach any of the 180 selected driving institutes across Malaysia offering this program,” Aedy stated. He emphasized that applicants must self-declare their physical, bodily, and mental health when registering at the driving institutes.

The current B2 license allows holders to ride motorcycles up to 250cc. However, motorcycles with engines of 500cc and above require a higher B license, which this program aims to facilitate. Aedy noted the public’s positive response to the initiative and mentioned that JPJ is enhancing the MyJPJ app to manage increased access requests efficiently.

The cost of RM160 for the upgrade includes several components: student registration, insurance, a two-hour transition and adaptation course, service fees covering vehicle and circuit rental, and JPJ test fees. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to elevate LMM Class B2/B1 holders to Class B while adhering to specific conditions. Notably, no new applications for acquiring LMM Class B1 at driving institutes will be entertained under this programme.
