Dozens of Malaysian holiday-goers recently faced a disappointing halt to their travel plans at the Thai border during a much-anticipated long weekend. Eager travelers were met with unexpected roadblocks, ranging from damaged passports to unresolved legal matters, including income tax arrears and customs-related issues.
Kedah Immigration director Mohd Ridzzuan Mohd Zain revealed that these issues were uncovered through thorough data checks conducted at the Bukit Kayu Hitam Immigration, Customs, Quarantine, and Security (ICQS) Complex. The director detailed, “There were 10 cases involving damaged passports, which included tearing, water damage, missing pages, and scratches.” In addition to the passport troubles, 20 individuals were identified with income tax arrears, while nine others encountered customs problems, significantly complicating their cross-border journey plans.
To circumvent such travel woes, Mohd Ridzzuan urged Malaysian citizens to utilize the Immigration’s Travel Check System (SSPI) portal. He highlighted that “by simply entering their MyKad number into the SSPI portal, the public can ascertain whether they are listed under any travel restrictions,” thus helping to avoid last-minute stress and disappointment before making international travel plans.
As these events unfolded at Bukit Kayu Hitam, the importance of preparing for international travel with complete and correct documentation has become ever more apparent. This incident serves as a critical reminder for all travelers to conduct due diligence and ensure their documents and any legal or financial obligations are fully resolved before embarking on overseas journeys.
