Malaysian Police Rescue 400 Children from Abusive Care Homes

In a shocking and significant development, Malaysian authorities have successfully rescued over 400 children from charity homes across two states, following alarming allegations of sexual and physical abuse. The coordinated raids, which resulted in the rescue operation, underscore the severity of the case and highlight potential systemic issues within these establishments.

The children, victims of these egregious acts, were reportedly the offspring of employees associated with Global Ikhwan Services and Business (GISB), a prominent business group allegedly overseeing these care homes. Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain confirmed the details, stating that 402 children were rescued during the raids, along with 171 adults, including religious teachers and caretakers, who were arrested.

The children, aged between one and 17 years, revealed harrowing accounts of neglect, abuse, sexual harassment, and molestation. GISB, while denying operating these homes, finds itself at the center of an investigation led by religious authorities in Selangor. The authorities have widened their probe into GISB’s activities, seeking to unveil any potential misconduct under both Islamic and secular laws intertwined within Malaysia’s dual-track legal framework.

GISB’s statement expressing their policy against actions conflicting with Islamic values and Malaysian laws does little to mitigate the gravity of the accusations. Police reports indicated that the facility staff not only subjected the children to abuse but also exploited religious sentiments to amass donations, a claim further aggravating the situation.

Inspector-General Razarudin detailed the horrifying conditions within these homes, noting that children were mistreated from infancy, enduring sexual abuse and even being conditioned to cross boundaries with fellow residents. Alarming practices included denying medical treatment to sick children until critical stages and administering punishments like burns using hot spoons.

International attention was drawn to this devastating instance of abuse, with Robert Gass, a representative for the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Malaysia, expressing profound shock and dismay. Gass underscored the urgent need for sustained professional medical and psychosocial support for the affected children.

The case has catapulted Malaysia into the spotlight, with investigations extending beyond its borders, as GISB has operations in various countries, including Indonesia, Singapore, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and France. These revelations have prompted a broader scrutiny of similar institutions globally to ensure such atrocities do not recur.

Two of the raided premises were officially registered as Islamic schools, according to a statement from the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS). Despite prior monitoring, no misconduct was detected; however, the department is committed to further investigation to ascertain any overlooked violations.

This distressing event follows the historical context of GISB’s links to the erstwhile Al-Arqam religious sect, banned in 1994, which sought to propagate an “Islamic way of life.” The scandal challenges these ideals, demanding a re-evaluation of the group’s practices and intentions.

As investigations continue, the children have been relocated to a secure facility in Kuala Lumpur, where they will receive medical assessments and care.
