Cowboys Offense Must Rise to Overcome Steelers Challenge

In the heart of Texas, as the Dallas Cowboys gear up for their 31st regular-season clash with the Pittsburgh Steelers, the stakes are high and the pressure is on. With Acrisure Stadium set to host Sunday night’s encounter, the Cowboys are looking to draw upon the echoes of previous victories, like the 35-30 triumph in Pittsburgh not too long ago. Yet, this time, they are not just battling history but also the harsh reality of missing key players.

The absence of defensive forces like Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence, coupled with the unavailability of Sam Williams, DaRon Bland, and Brandin Cooks, has left the Cowboys’ defense vulnerable. Questions hover around the fitness of Trevon Diggs and Caelen Carson, making it clear that the Cowboys need to pivot their strategy substantially.

The Offense Needs to Shine

Amidst these challenges, it’s apparent that the Cowboys need their offense to reach new heights. Last season, their offensive prowess was undeniable, boasting a 12-5 regular season record, first-place rankings in categories like average points per game (29.9) and total offense, and Dak Prescott leading the charge with 36 touchdown passes and a QB rating of 105.9. CeeDee Lamb stood tall with 135 receptions, second in both receiving yards and yards from scrimmage.

Yet, this year, the offensive landscape tells a different story. Four games in, the team stands at 2-2, trailing the Washington Commanders, and tied with the Eagles in the NFC East. They’re averaging 24.25 points per game, with their best performance early on against Cleveland at 33 points. Their offense seems sluggish, having only scored nine touchdowns so far—an average of just 2.25 per game.

Challenges in Execution

Several factors appear to contribute to the Cowboys’ struggles. Most significantly, the offensive line has not reached its peak performance. Starting rookies like Tyler Guyton at left tackle and Cooper Beebe at center contribute to growing pains as the line strives for cohesion. The running game, with Rico Dowdle in the leading role, is still finding its rhythm, marked by limited snaps and output.

In the aerial game, it seems CeeDee Lamb’s absence during training camp is taking a toll, and Brandin Cooks’ knee issues only add to the challenge. Meanwhile, penalties are thwarting progress, with 17 offensive penalties already translating to 138 yards lost, and hindered third-down conversions as a result.

Bracing for Battle

The Cowboys anticipate facing a formidable defense when they clash with the Steelers, who have allowed an average of just 8.25 points a game before the Colts’ surge in Game 4. As the Cowboys battle both opponents and nature—with thunderstorms forecasted on game day—it is vital for their offense to adapt, especially on a grass field.

Complementary football could offer a lifeline, focusing on controlling the ball on offense, ensuring efficient third-down conversions, and fortifying a shorthanded defense. Achieving this means establishing a streak, something the Cowboys hope to replicate from seasons past.

As Coach Mike McCarthy prepares his team, the message is clear: the game plan must be executed at the highest level possible. Facing a team equipped with the likes of T.J. Watt and Cameron Hayward, the Cowboys’ offense holds the key to turning these challenges into an opportunity for triumph, despite the odds. It’s time for the Cowboys to kick their offense into high gear and seize the moment.
